Expo vs Bare React Native — How We Choose

Expo (managed and bare workflow) is our default for new React Native projects. Expo EAS Build handles cloud-based iOS and Android builds without requiring Mac hardware or Xcode expertise on your team. Expo Updates provides OTA JavaScript bundle delivery. The Expo SDK covers the vast majority of device APIs — camera, location, push notifications, biometrics, in-app purchases — without writing native code.

Bare React Native (without Expo) is appropriate when the project requires native modules not available in the Expo SDK, when maximum control over the native build configuration is required, or when migrating an existing bare React Native codebase. We have native Swift and Kotlin depth in the team — so when a native module needs to be written, we write it ourselves rather than blocking on a third party.

For businesses evaluating Flutter as an alternative: we build both. Flutter is an excellent choice for certain projects — particularly when pixel-perfect cross-platform consistency matters more than native look-and-feel.
